Description
Revised Version of the 1978 GDR Facsimile Reproduction of the First Edition of the Manifesto of the Communist Party of 1848, carefully modernised and published in 2017 by Karl von Orb
The work presents itself as a revision without addition. No arguments are corrected, no positions updated. The intervention operates entirely through subtraction.
All letters are removed. What remains are numbers, punctuation marks, and the layout’s cadence: headings, breaks, enumerations. Syntax survives without semantics. The manifesto is not erased; it is rendered unreadable while keeping its rhetorical scaffolding intact.
What appears as a single object is, in fact, a repetition. Each sheet contains the complete, stripped text. The work exists not as a book, but as a stack of identical totalities. It is an archive made of copies that cannot transmit what they preserve.
This is not silence, but residue. The text persists as form, as formatting, as countable structure. It continues to demand printing, handling, storage, while refusing address.
By keeping the mechanisms of publication and distribution intact while voiding language, the work shifts the manifesto from proclamation to administrative artifact. What was written to mobilize becomes something that can only be reproduced.
The manifesto no longer speaks.
It circulates.
